Award-winning Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata has released a stirring new song in support of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Titled Black Stars, the song was released on 3 June 2026 and combines elements of Ghanaian highlife with the distinctive rhythms of Mfantse Ebibindwom, creating a sound that is both traditional and contemporary. The track has already begun attracting attention from football fans and music lovers alike for its patriotic message and rich cultural identity.
The song’s video features contributions from several talented musicians and creatives, including Takoradi’s fast-rising sensation Nemesis LOSO, beat producer Wilis Beatz, Abochi, Two Bars, and others. Their collective effort adds depth and energy to the production, resulting in a song designed to inspire supporters as Ghana prepares for another appearance on football’s biggest stage. Kinaata’s lyrical delivery, coupled with the vibrant instrumentation, captures the hopes and aspirations of a nation eager to see the Black Stars succeed.
This is not the first time Kofi Kinaata has lent his voice to the national team’s cause. Prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, he featured alongside the late Castro in a popular Black Stars-themed song that quickly became a favourite among Ghanaian football supporters. More than a decade later, the song remains a fixture at football gatherings and match-day celebrations, highlighting the enduring connection between music and sport in Ghana.
A notable feature of the new anthem is its incorporation of Mfantse Ebibindwom, a traditional rhythmic style associated with several spiritual churches in Mfantse communities. The rhythm is particularly prominent in worship within the 12 Apostles Church, Ghana, popularly known as “Awoyo” or “Nankaba”, whose headquarters is located at Kormantse in the Central Region. The style is also used by the African Faith Tabernacle Spiritual Church, commonly known as “Nkansah”, founded by Prophet James Kwame Nkansah in 1919. By drawing on this musical heritage, Kinaata introduces a traditional sound to a modern audience while celebrating an important aspect of Ghana’s cultural identity.
The release comes at a time when excitement is building for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament, scheduled to begin on 11 June 2026, will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, making it the largest edition in the competition’s history. Ghana will be hoping to make another memorable run on the global stage, and patriotic songs such as Black Stars are expected to play a role in rallying support across the country.
Kofi Kinaata has built a reputation for producing socially conscious and culturally grounded music, and Black Stars continues that tradition. Blending highlife with Mfantse Ebibindwom rhythms, Kofi Kinaata not only offers encouragement to the national team but also showcases the richness of Ghanaian culture to the world. The song is available on YouTube and is expected to become one of the soundtrack pieces accompanying Ghana’s World Cup journey.
