The maiden edition of the Ashanti Festival is set to take off with a series of exciting events that celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Ashanti people. Scheduled from April 12 to April 26, the festival will feature a diverse lineup of activities, including a Twi Spelling Bee, cultural performances, traditional exhibitions, and community-centered initiatives.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, April 12, with a cleanup exercise across various locations, followed by an opening match and the launch of the Inter-District Soccer Games at the Asokwa Astro Turf. Later in the evening, a Boxing Night event will be held at the Parade Grounds, KNUST, promising an action-packed start to the festival.

On Sunday, April 13, traditional rites will take center stage with Akwasidae/Yɛkɔsom at Manhyia, highlighting the deep-rooted customs of the Ashanti Kingdom. A fashion exhibition and fashion night at the Rattray Park will add a modern touch to the celebrations, showcasing the creativity of local designers.

Monday, April 14, is dedicated to education and intellectual activities, with a Basic School Spelling Bee in both English and Twi at Prempeh Assembly Hall. An Inter-SHS Debate Competition and a Science and Technology Fair will follow, encouraging young minds to engage in critical thinking and innovation.

Tuesday, April 15, will feature a cultural day, where various student groups will perform traditional dances, music, and drama at the Kumasi Cultural Center. A food fair and bazaar will also be held, allowing attendees to savor authentic Ashanti cuisine and experience local craftsmanship.

Ashanti development takes the spotlight on Wednesday, April 16, with a forum at Prempeh Assembly Hall. Discussions on the region’s progress and open dialogue sessions will bring together key stakeholders to explore opportunities for growth and advancement.

Health and humanitarian activities dominate Thursday, April 17. A free health screening will take place at Kumasi Central Prisons, while a blood donation exercise will be held at Kumasi City Mall. A special movie night will be organized at Golden Eagle Cinema to honor fallen heroes of the Kumawood movie industry.

The festival continues on Friday, April 18, with an excursion and carnival at Lake Bosomtwe, offering a fun-filled experience for families and tourists. Meanwhile, a kids’ festival at Jubilee Park will provide an engaging platform for children to partake in various entertaining and educational activities.

On Saturday, April 19, the focus shifts to traditional artistry with the Kwabre Anwenɛ3 festival, which will display wood carvings and adinkra symbols at Mamponteng. Later in the afternoon, the much-anticipated Kente Festival will be held at Bonwire, celebrating the intricate and symbolic designs of the prestigious Ashanti textile. The day will conclude with the Ashanti Festival Concert, a musical extravaganza at Heroes Park.

Sunday, April 20, will feature an Ashanti Dramologue at the KNUST CCB Auditorium, where Kumawood actors, comedians, and storytellers will take the audience through an artistic journey of Ashanti traditions and entertainment.

Monday, April 21, will see a fundraising event at Manhyia, with proceeds going to support the operations of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The grand finale of the Ashanti Festival is scheduled for Friday, April 26, with a thanksgiving and celebration event marking the 74th birthday of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Anglican Cathedral.

This maiden Ashanti Festival promises to be a unique blend of tradition, entertainment, and community engagement, bringing together people from all walks of life to honor the enduring legacy of the Ashanti Kingdom.
